On the last day of our mountain vacation we went further upriver to a beachy spot. We spied a couple of swallowtails, then going further on we found hundreds of them, seemingly sitting on the beach and drinking. Turns out this is male swallowtail "puddling" - they drink water with amino acids and sodium to make them stronger.
