I'm going to challenge you... since I'm Portuguese and spend all my time communicating with you in English, tell me how many words you know in Portuguese and what they are. But take note: it's cheating to use Google Translate, lol.

I'm very curious to hear your answers.

Hi Ana,
I so admire those of you who can speak more than one language, but I'm not one of them! I remember taking Spanish for 6 weeks in high school and the only thing I can do is count to 10! I also took 6 weeks of French and remember nothing from that class! I've been associated with missionaries who spoke Portuguese (after their training) but that's about it when it comes to the language!
How did you learn English?

I think the only Portuguese word I know is Fado. And somewhere in the back of my head, I think there was a song in Portuguese back in the 80s that was a huge hit, but for the life of me, I can't remember.

I didn't immediately have a clue, but reading the answers, I recognize... fado, pastéis de nata...
I should go on holiday to Portugal sometime.

What a terrible tram accident in Lisbon... I saw in the News on our national TV channel

I speak Spanish so I recognize a lot of Portuguese words when I see them written... but off the top of my head, the one word that came to me is lambada...

I didn't think I knew any words at all in Portuguese, but I recognize lambada, and I decided to Google...LOL There are a few words that I learned back in high school when I took 2 years of Spanish that are the same in Portuguese...por favor, de nada, ola is similar (just missing the "h")...and I feel like desculpe might be the same, not sure though :hiding2::giggle4:

Well, while I was tempted to cheat, I didn't. I know exactly zero except anything in Spanish that is the same. I started taking Spanish in 4th grade, had it thru 8th and then 2 more years in high school. I was pretty good then, but really rusty, dusty & musty now.

I'm sorry to hear that you haven't retained a single word of Portuguese. I can teach you some if you'd like. As for my English... well, currently our students start taking English classes in the 3rd grade and continue to take them on a mandatory basis until the 11th grade. They can even continue taking them for another year on an optional basis. As you can see, it's a few years and they end up producing more of an effect than 6 weeks, LoL.

Oh, yes!! Fado is a musical style characteristic of Portugal, especially Lisbon. You scored!! one point to Eva! dance4

Yes, I think you should came an visit us. The accident was really terrible, so sad. We had a a day of national mourning because of this. I´m going to give you a point too!! :heartpumplove:

ola and obrigado are the only words that come to mind.
Oh, two words ... wonderful!! Just to give you some more information, because Portuguese is a somewhat complicated language in terms of grammar, the woman says "obrigada" and the man says "obrigado".
two points for you!! dance4

Well, to tell you the true Olga, Lambada is a music style from Brasil (Brasil in Portuguese, Brazil in, what I call Brazillian). So, we can say that it´s a word that can be used Portugal but only to refer to the musical style. I will give you one point anyway!! :cheer:

Wow, Jenn!! great job. I already explain the Lambada thing, I´m sure you all don´t know that if I say "levas uma lambada" that means that I´m warning you that you're going to get slapped in the face :giggle4: por favor=please, de nada= you´re welcome, olá= hi and desculpe= I´m sorry. You have four point!! dance4

Spanish is very similar to Portuguese, we are neighbors after all! :heartpumplove:

@AnaSantos Is there a big difference between the Portuguese spoken in Portugal and the Portuguese spoken in Brazil? Can you understand eachother or has the Brazilian Portuguese evolved too much in another direction?

Languages are a living organism, always evolving. It's so fascinating.

Yeah, I saw on Google that Lambada meant slapping....but it is the dance that I am familiar with...I don't know if I deserve points since it is Spanish that I thought I knew, but ended up doubling in Portuguese? :rotfl: I was just so curious that I had to see what words I might actually KNOW without realizing it! I am AMAZED by all of you girlies on here that speak multiple languages :heartpumplove:...I have enough trouble with my native English language most days :floorlaugh:

This was a fun idea, Ana...Spanish is the only other language that I have ever taken, my American husband speaks fluent French because his parents were missionaries in France and his Dad still lives there half of the year. My husband lived in France from age 8 to 18...most of the few phrases/words I know are either sweet or dirty because one of the girls that he knew in France that came to visit us back in the late 90's taught me some naughty words/phrases.... :hiding2: :giggle4: I was only 22, she was 23, we got along really well and she really ended up excelling at speaking English while visiting us because we talked SO much with each other :beatingheart: Our birthdays were only ONE day apart, as well...it is crazy...she is just one year and one day younger than me! I rarely meet other August people, especially so close to my own Bday! She was the closest to my Bday that I had ever met until HERE in this tiny town that we moved to 6 years ago that only has around 760 people in it, I met a girl exactly 20 years younger than me...same Bday....she's a sweetheart and I miss hanging with her since I stopped volunteering for the town's Park & Rec board 2 years ago.

Mkay, none of that had much to do with your original topic...LOL Sorry, I am WAY over caffeinated...my youngest daughter started college 2 weeks ago, and I had to get up early to drive her to classes the last three days because my husband wasn't feeling well, leaving at 7:15am, and then even more driving back and forth, and we live a good 35/40 minutes from the school, depending on highway traffic. I have had SO much caffeine over the last few days, and I am a person who used to drink a TON of coffee, but I usually will only have one cup once or twice a week, if needed now...I have had up to two cups before heading to school with her AND two of the last three days I also had a diet coke on top of that :couchhide: I don't know why, but I had two cups of coffee THIS morning, as well, when I wasn't even having to drive her to school because she doesn't go in on Fridays....I think all of the caffeine is affecting me...making me TOO chatty...sorry :wardrobehide:goofysmile1:heartpumplove:
