Oscraps

I'm very curious ...

This was a fun idea, Ana...Spanish is the only other language that I have ever taken, my American husband speaks fluent French because his parents were missionaries in France and his Dad still lives there half of the year. My husband lived in France from age 8 to 18...most of the few phrases/words I know are either sweet or dirty because one of the girls that he knew in France that came to visit us back in the late 90's taught me some naughty words/phrases.... :hiding2: :giggle4: I was only 22, she was 23, we got along really well and she really ended up excelling at speaking English while visiting us because we talked SO much with each other :beatingheart: Our birthdays were only ONE day apart, as well...it is crazy...she is just one year and one day younger than me! I rarely meet other August people, especially so close to my own Bday! She was the closest to my Bday that I had ever met until HERE in this tiny town that we moved to 6 years ago that only has around 760 people in it, I met a girl exactly 20 years younger than me...same Bday....she's a sweetheart and I miss hanging with her since I stopped volunteering for the town's Park & Rec board 2 years ago.

Mkay, none of that had much to do with your original topic...LOL Sorry, I am WAY over caffeinated...my youngest daughter started college 2 weeks ago, and I had to get up early to drive her to classes the last three days because my husband wasn't feeling well, leaving at 7:15am, and then even more driving back and forth, and we live a good 35/40 minutes from the school, depending on highway traffic. I have had SO much caffeine over the last few days, and I am a person who used to drink a TON of coffee, but I usually will only have one cup once or twice a week, if needed now...I have had up to two cups before heading to school with her AND two of the last three days I also had a diet coke on top of that :couchhide: I don't know why, but I had two cups of coffee THIS morning, as well, when I wasn't even having to drive her to school because she doesn't go in on Fridays....I think all of the caffeine is affecting me...making me TOO chatty...sorry :wardrobehide:goofysmile1:heartpumplove:
poor Jenn! You're a junkie. I knew it! Are you still doing something weird with your car? It was scary, I think... Be glad I don't remember *lol* I hope you can get off that stuff. It's possible, believe me! I haven't smoked for a year and a half, and I prefer wine and beer, preferably non-alcoholic—and coffee in very small doses, diluted with lots of water. All of this gets me through the day, but it's very boring, believe me

I'm really sorry, Ana - I don't speak Portuguese. I spent a few years at a community college to learn Spanish and a few years of business English for my job. But if you don't speak the languages, you forget a lot. That's why I'm glad to be brushing up on my English here and learning new nonsense, because our girls have a thing for abbreviations. Then I don't understand anything anymore. A colleague at work spoke Portuguese, and I remember finding the pronunciation interesting.

I'm sorry to hear that you haven't retained a single word of Portuguese. I can teach you some if you'd like. As for my English... well, currently our students start taking English classes in the 3rd grade and continue to take them on a mandatory basis until the 11th grade. They can even continue taking them for another year on an optional basis. As you can see, it's a few years and they end up producing more of an effect than 6 weeks, LoL.
Thank you for the offer, Ana! But I think this 70 year old will have to pass on the Portuguese lessons!
I don't know why they even offer only 6 weeks of a foreign language in our schools. It may be different from 50+ years ago when I was in school, however.

@AnaSantos Is there a big difference between the Portuguese spoken in Portugal and the Portuguese spoken in Brazil? Can you understand eachother or has the Brazilian Portuguese evolved too much in another direction?

Languages are a living organism, always evolving. It's so fascinating.
Eva, we can understand each other perfectly. Officially, the language is Portuguese in both countries, but it's a topic that raises some debate among the Portuguese, who continue to say that we speak Portuguese while in Brasil they speak Brazilian. In 1990, an orthographic agreement was signed to bring the spelling of Portuguese-speaking countries closer together. However, there is still some distance in oral terms, which consequently affects spelling.

Well dear Jenn, this is the caffeine speaking, right?? :coffeedrinker:In Portugal we learn french in school for 3 years at least but we can choose German, Spanish or Mandarin if the school offers these subjects.

Glad to know I'm not the only one going crazy with abbreviations. It took me forever to figure out what MIA meant. :giggle4:

I'm back on the caffeine again already, this morning :hiding2: My body keeps waking up around 5 in the morning and I am a night owl...it's not a great combo...:floorlaugh::voodoodoll:

We were required to take two years of another language when I was in high school...I actually enjoyed Spanish and did really well, I just never used it after graduating so I forgot most of it :(
