What Do You Do on New Year's Day?

My Mom used to say, "What you do on New Year's Day is what you will do on New Year's Day!" So, we hedged our bets. We:
worked a little
played a little
watched the Tournament of Roses Parade
watched football
watched a favorite show or movie in between
ate black-eyed peas and hog jowl with cornbread and oyster dressing (for good luck)

What does your family do?

Yeah, I don't go out much on New Year's Eve any more, either. Used to love it when I was younger, but always liked to be able to stay the night wherever I celebrated so I didn't have to brave the craziness outside. When I was stationed at Burtonwood Army Depot in Cheshire, England (it was RAF Burtonwood on loan to the US Army after de Gaulle kicked NATO out of France and it is now mostly gone and redeveloped), though, it was wonderful and safe. There were only 100 military personnel and their families and a handful of American civilian personnel and their families stationed there, and a boatload of English civilian personnel that worked there. Some years we had our New Year's Eve party at the small community center in the housing area, some at the Anglo American center when it was in one of the quonsets, some in the commons area in Header House (the main building) that included steak dinners. Yum! Anyway, we could walk when it was in the housing area - never more than three blocks it was that small - or base transportation was made available that night if we were at either of the other locations. Never a need to worry about drunk drivers and never any crazies to mar the event. That was marvelous!

We don't really do much, usually get together with family or friends. The only rule is no laundry on New Years Day - brings bad luck.
I'd never heard that before! My only tradition is to watch the Tournament of Roses Parade. Other than that, it's mostly just a day of relaxation.

We don't really have any New Year's Day traditions. We also just stay home on NYE cause our dogs need us to be here. 2003 was the last NYE when we didn't have at least one dog who was terrified of fireworks.

We don't do much of anything on NYE. I like to have everyone at home before the crazies get out. Both kids work afternoon until 7:30 or 8. I'll be very glad to have them home but that should be early enough to be pretty safe I hope. Then, on New Year's Day, we are driving down to Orlando to cheer on the Hawkeyes in the Citrus Bowl. Should be good weather and a fun day.

We used to do things on NYE but now just watch the ball drop on TV then have a flute of champagne. On New Year's Day we'll watch some football on TV if we can, but my favorite thing is going out birding to start a new list of the birds I see for the year. I've scrapped my list for Jan. 1 some years. These days we don't do much and it's a pretty short list but still fun. I also cook a pork roast we eat with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. That tradition comes from DH's family.

My mom used to always say you'd be washing your good luck, or a loved one, away. I'm not generally superstitious, but this one sticks with me lol

We used to do fireworks but so many of our neighbors do them now that we just sit back and watch!

Sounds like fun. I love football in person. I'll watch it on TV but it loses something in the translation.

We don't do much of anything. This year, with the family all living close together, we might get together for left-overs. We're having a low-keyed party on NYE, but we live right down the lane, so we don't have to go out and drive anywhere.

That sounds lovely! Wish my family was that close!

Don't bother much about New Year's. I make a cake on New Year's Eve, and some a bit fancier dinner. Then we usually watch some TV, most likely a movie or something. New Year's Day isn't anything special.

On New Year's Day, we always have a family party ... with my mom, my sister and my brother-in-law, my son and his family and us ...
At Christmas the party was with my sister, now with me ... very simple ... a piece of cake with coffee in the afternoon and in the evening there is gourmet.
In Flanders it is also a tradition that the children read a New Year's letter to the grandmothers and grandfathers ... they then receive a small gift ....
My grandson (4 y.) was with us yesterday. He told me he has no lyrics to recite but that he learned a song. 'But I'm going to sing it for you on Saturday Grandma, not today' he said ....
The New Year's letters are made at school and are usually crafts...
I'll post a picture of it on Sunday...

I'd forgotten - there's one thing I do on New Year's Day - think it will be the 5th year now. During the year I save all the ... oh, I don't know the English word ... paper/label/wrap/whatever from the yarn I've used up, in a canister. On Jan 1, I go through them, count how many skeins I've used, how many grams and how many meters. Keep a record to see if I do more or less than last year. Just for fun.

Tonight for New Years Eve my DH will cook steaks for us. However New Years day is usually pretty uneventful just going grocery shopping and taking down the Christmas Tree and decorations. Not like when we were a young couple and attended lots of New Years Eve Parties. Those days are long gone! I do not miss kissing others at the Stroke of Midnight UGH!!

We don't do anything really. But this year I am starting to read the bible. I joined a Bible Recap group to read the bible in one year. 3 chapters a day. It starts new years day. Hopefully this time I will get beyond Genesis. Wishful thinking.
