Surprising Finds in my Gardens

I had a few surprises in my gardens this week. The first one was a good surprise. I was pulling weeds from my flower bed and found a four leaf clover. It’s silly that a four leaf clover can still put a smile on my face! The second find was not a good one. While picking tomatoes, I reached down to get one near the bottom and almost touched the snake that was hiding there! I ran away as fast as these granny legs would take me! He can have that tomato!

The only time I run is if it is a rattler...we have usually one or two, a year....we already had a HUGE one this year. I love the king snakes and rat snakes...they are cool and chill and uber helpful :lovey3: Congrats on your 4 leaf clover!!! :beatingheart:

Oh my gosh, a rattler - I would run like the zombies were chasing me. If you ever see me running, it's pretty bad. :eek3:

Thank you, Jenn! I think the snake may have been a garter snake but I didn't stick around to get better acquainted! :D I would have a heart attack if I saw a rattler! You are a lot braver than I am! I saved the four leaf clover as I think they are so pretty!

That's such a sweet find, Evelyn! I hope it is a sign as well for you. ♥

My first instinct when I am surprised by a snake is to jump and then lean back down and talk to it :D

I just pictured you bending down to talk to my garden snake! You are a lot braver than I am! I ran! I did go back to gather some tomatoes but not the tomato he was resting under!

We have Eastern rattlers, Copperheads, and Watermoccasins. NOPE, no convos going on here- two of those three are MEAN and AGGRESSIVE. The local advice given here is don't get close enough to find out which one it is!

@joyfulheartdesigns what did you do with/about the rattler?

@Cherylndesigns, I'm right there with ya! :

Amanda, if rattlers were super common around here, I'd probably hold off on convos too! There are timber rattlers and copperheads here, but they tend to stay away from people. We have a lot of rat snakes and garter snakes, they are my friends. The other two--not so much :jawdrop3:

We have a forest backyard- so we don't even think about going close. We do have a lot of garter/yard snakes, they don't concern me and have become easy to distinguish. But if they are bigger than an inch in (circumference?) I am concerned because of the grandkids. Our GS is a mersa carrier, so we are always hyper cautious. Our neighbor had a copperhead recently. We keep things cut down and cleared out up to the wood's edge.
You would love the skinks we have here. Me, I used to hate them, but I kinds am used to them now. Plus I like lizards and they are sorta cousins. Blue one are a bit eerie though, and BIG!

I called my son who lives two houses over and he shot it :( I do NOT like killing creatures, but the rattlers are very dangerous, and we have two indoor/outdoor kitties, and I didn't want to risk it! They often show up around my bird feeders, trying to eat birds, which makes me mad...two years ago I had gone out to refill one of the feeders and I looked down and there was a rattle snake looking up at me with it's mouth open, just one foot away!!! It had JUST eaten a bird, so it was kind of frozen there, trying to swallow the bird...I ran and called my son to come help. I was VERY lucky that it had just eaten one of the birds...it would have struck me if not! :glowskull:

WOW! Yes, you were being looked after! ;) One of my best friend's sons was bitten by a cottonmouth at age 4 and nearly died. That jakey thing was as big around as his dad's arm! We know it was prayer that brought Dominique through! Shew!!

Oh my goodness...I am SO happy that he survived!!! :heartpumpred: My husband stupidly tried to pick up a cottonmouth out in the woods about 20 years ago when he was on a retreat, not realizing what it was, and he grabbed it a little too far down below the head, and it turned around and bit him I think four or five times.... Thankfully, even though it was out in the woods in Tennessee, they were able to get him to a clinic that had anti venom! He was SO swollen down the entire side of his body that he was bitten on...it was CRAZY scary!!

Yep, I can imagine. They are very aggessive here. My son's family lives on a big lake. They've had some down under their pier. I pray for safety for the kids daily- between a forest and lake on same property. Glad they have some cats and a dog.

I can see why you all don't want to chat up the snakes like I do. Eek. In all of the years my DS has been hiking, I *think* he saw a rattlesnake once.
