Rooting for the forgotten goodies...

One of the challenges this month is to create a page using a sketch at an inspiration (challenge #5). This brought back memories of days when there were no templates. For my page I ended up using a photo from nine years ago and a kit I've had for years. Which made me wonder if you guys reuse older kits... we all love buying new ones - and I am no exception - but I have so many awesome kits in my stash that I haven't used in years... and.. is it silly of my to root for the forgotten goodies???

I've been thinking about this. I have SOOOO MANY old kits, that are absolutely wonderful, but I tend to always go for the new. Mainly I think that is because when you are on a CT, you are supposed to promote the new stuff, and there's just 24 hrs in a day. I wonder what it would be like if I weren't on a CT. Would I use my stash more then?

Another thing that limit my use of older kits is that many of the designers have retired & most galleries/shops/forums only allow current designers and kits for challenges. I guess most of my stash gets "disqualified" just for this reason.

I don't do CT work so am free to use whatever I like, well, except I only post here at the O, so like Eva keep (reluctantly) weeding out designers who depart. I like using new designs, but I keep things in chronological order and will go back to where older ones are that I like. Sometimes I start looking for what I need at some specific year just so I use something from back then. There is so much nice work to choose from. As long as it's still in the store, it may encourage others to get it.

I am kept busy with new release CT goodies quite a bit but when I get a chance to go back and use some older products, especially mixing and matching kits, that makes me happy.

When I'm not doing a page for one of my CT's I try to treat my stash like a CT - old and new stuff alike. I buy a lot but don't use much of it, so last year I decided to treat my stash like I do my CT's - I can always find something to scrap about with CT kits, so when I'm itcihng to play with something I pick a number between 1-however many kits are in my new folder, and scrap with that kit. If I just can't find something to make with it I delete it. It seems to work for me! I rarely go back and use kits that I've already used though.

Chiming in as a designer — I am always thrilled when my older kits are used, even by CT’s ( hint, hint). I love designing, but it’s frustrating to see kits used sorta “one and done“ - after all, they don’t have an expiration date LOL! I’m trying hard to get my older products used because they are always a labor of love.

I love to use my older kits and do as often as I can. Yes, as a CT member I need to do the newest, but when a template is the newest, I like to go to my stash and use an older kit/collection by that designer. I do try to go through my folders and move kits into a "Mot in Store" or "Retired" folder, just like I do with designers who have departed. I bought those older kits because I loved them, so...
Sometimes I make an entire section of an album with just one or two mixable kits. For instance, I will do one branch or twig on the family tree in one or two and use an element(s) or paper as the bridge between two. Sometimes I'll use a QP but reduce it and use a paper that I will use as the background for a two-page spread. If you see a one page heritage LO here, there is probably a second, often journaling page,in the works.

Vicki, the truth is, there is no way of knowing how much your kits are used because not everybody post their layouts... I suspect there are lots of people out there loving and using your older kits, creating gorgeous pages for their family and friends.

Before I became a CT I rarely posted in galleries, perhaps when participating in a challenge, but it was never a priority. And because I felt my layouts were not as gorgeous/creative/technical as those in galleries. But that doesn't mean I wasn't creating. And I don't think I have a kit in my stash I haven't used at least two-three times - each time for a two-pager - because that's what an average paying customer does - sure, we buy new stuff because buying new goodies is a hobby in itself - guilty as charged, but we also use what we buy and one could always cajole two-three totally different layouts you'd never say were done using the same kit.

i definitely use older goodies. Sometimes on their own and sometimes in combination with other stuff. I have a few examoles. For instance, I’ve already used @Vicki Robinson PS I Love You Collection three times. Once for a photoless page last year. Then I combined it with another kit last month for a page that has nothing to do with love. Then I used it again on its own this week for a third page. I plan to combine it with brushes I just purchased for a challenge page. That’ll be it’s fourth time in use. (I do love the great memory Evernote gives me. lol)

I return to the 52 Inspirations stuff over and over again. I find it’s a great resource when I need one more paper or just a couple more elements to complete a page.

There are also some parts of older kits/collections I return to again and again. For example, I have returned to the butterflies in CBD’s Metamorphosis collection again and again. I love using butterflies and they fit my style so perfectly. That’s one of the great things about digital, I never run out of her butterflies.

i also find buying a new pack of gesso or elements can really help me keep using my stash. I’ve used my Regina Falango birds and butterflies numerous times since I bought them. Same for my Anna Aspnes flutterbys. (Okay, I may love butterflies as much as I love paint. lol)

i do find that I’m much more likely to reuse kits that have plenty of painty and dimensional elements cause those kits fit my style best. I do plenty of mixing and matching when do art journaling. Plus, if I have time, I think it’s fun to pull stuff from a variety of kits and designers for my pages.

Just my long winded two cents.

I used to be on many CT's in the past and boy do I have tons of kits on my old laptops and drives. I even at one point was designing kits but now getting back into digital scrapping I'm mainly using new kits because of the challenges. Would be fun to use some old kits but I don't think I have any for this store.

I HAVE to admit I'm extremely guilty of not using "forgotten goodies". I'm on CT's and seem to always gravitate to them. I've been going through my stash, however, and I DO have some. Thanks for this thread.

When I am creating an album for someone else, I will haul out my older kits especially if the page/album is for a baby or men.
When completing CT work... well you know the expectations. If my page is for a challenge I will mix kits from a certain designer or mix designers using the older kits.
