Question about reprinting cropped photos (VERY LONG!!!)

Ok girls...I have a question.

I have a friend (im not super close with her, but we are friends, I met her a few years back thru other friends) She is a photographer, she owns her photography business. She did my wedding photos. She has been doing Nico's photos since he was born. Recently she did Nico's 1 year photos.I love her work. She always gives all of us girls in our circle of friends really good deals, she doesn't charge us sitting fees, she just asks that we refer her and stuff, which we all do. I always order stuff thru her, my wedding thank you cards, Christmas cards, etc. and for Nico's 3 month and 6month photos, since i couldn't decide what I wanted, I ordered all of his proofs. ($100 each time for about 80-100proofs) Then when he was around 6 months old I started scrapping. So, now I want a disc of all his photos so I can scrap them. So.....
I got a disc of his 9 month and 1 year photos from her. I know she gave me a huge break because I am a friend she only charged me $60 for the disc, it has about 75 photos on it.

So, I have scrapped some, and have decided to order a few reprints on my own. When I tried to order a couple of them in an 8x10 size, they get all screwy and Nico's head and feet get chopped off. When I asked her about it she says its the way she crops the photos, they cant be made any bigger than a 4x6. And, if I want them she can "fix" them in Photoshop. (??) I dont understand this and my other friends and I have gone over this a million times to try and understand but its crazy. Another friend had the same issue at Christmas time when she bought a disc from her and tried to order her son's photos in an 11x14. His head got chopped off at the top!

This has been going on 4 weeks of back and forth with her, she is flighty to begin with but at first I thought she was just being her flighty self and now I feel like she is for some reason just not wanting to help me. I'm wondering if she crops all the photos and deletes her originals? would that matter?

The end result is that I have a disc of photos I paid for (she named the price) and I simply cant have them in the size I want because of the way she crops them, unless she "fixes" them.... which she claims she doesn't know when she can get to.... because she has no free time as kids are on April vaca. and its wedding season. Sorry for the run on sentence but im so irritated and just venting.

Anyway, the question is - if she crops the photos is there a reason they will not work when reprinted at a larger size? (p.s. resolution is not a part of the problem)

I appreciate anyone's input!! Thanks Ladies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm, the only thing i can think of is the proportions. Like, 4x6 is a different proportion than 11x14.

But - what makes no sense to me is that she charged you for the disc so you could get reprints, yet made it so that you couldn't order a large size.

I think it is kinda funky. Does she know you are trying to reprint?

Maybe someone else can give you a little better idea on this.

Let me know if you don't get a good answer about this. I will pass the question on to a friend of mine who is a photographer and see if she has an answer for you. I would think it would be a proportion issue. What program do you use? Maybe you can fix them. It might take awhile but you could redo them yourself and then resave them. Going from 4x6 to 8x10 will crop of the the top and bottom a bit but it should be adjustable.

Hi Kelly!!

I shoot all my photos at the highest setting on my camera so when I upload them they are about an 11x17 size.

When you crop in PS you can specify the size that you want the image (orig. 11x17) to be cropped to 4x6. So that the highest the photo can be blown up to without losing resolution is 4x6. I also crop mine for friends as 4x6 size to save on size/space unless my friends tell me they want them blown up.

Hope that helps.

Not as far as I know....she would have to recrop them...or give them to you at the original size.

She literally just emailed me the 2 images "re-cropped" so i could order them at an 8x10. She knew I wanted to reprint. Shes a freak.l... I dont get it. But whatever .....all that and its solved. She said next time just to tell her ahead of time if I want to order reprints in a large size before she crops em. Who knows!!!

Thanx Tali!

Here's another hint about printing photos at Costco...

If you order them online....I know that there is a "crop" button, or an edit button where you can see how Costco will automatically crop them. You can manually move their crop lines....so maybe you can not cut off the parts you want?

Hope that helps...sorry about not being specific, I don't remember the actual buttons names or anything.

I was going to say what Wendy said. I had the same issue with some pics at Christmas when I ordered from Walgreens. I swore they were 4 x 6 in Photoshop. When I ordered them, it chopped a bunch off. It all had to do with the way Walgreens had their built in cropping. It was a pain in the arse to work around. =) I know that's not much help either. =) Sorry!

Thanks Girls!!

I think the issue was along the lines of what Kat said...she cropped them and the dimensions were off so the photo got cropped even more when trying to print it at a larger size....all is fixed now and I thank you guys for your info!!!!!!!!!!
