Hey girlies!!

I'm really into Etsy...it's like my new addiction (that I'm luckily keeping under control for now...so mr gorgeous will still like me!! LOL!!)!

But I'm thinking of opening up my own store there, too...

what do you think makes a successful etsy store?? IE...what types of handmade items would sway you to buy there?

and even on a more general level, what makes you even click on a store?

Let me know your thoughts on the subject - if you have an etsy store, what kinds of products are doing well???

I know this won't help much, as I haven't really bought much on etsy yet besides a few knitted props for my photo business, but do like to browse around. I know I click more on stores that have great product photography, nice but real descriptions, or even if I think they have a creative name. I like when their page looks professional & looks like them.

Hi Sally
I have a fairly new Etsy shop. I really started putting stuff up there in Jan. 2010. It's exciting and fun to put stuff up there and then see who is interested. It is a little slow going.

What I've learned so far is photography/showcasing and marketing to your site is just as important as the product itself.

I am learning things like SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for the search engines to find you; learning about tagging the product. I am trying my darnest (slowly) to market the site. Just because you have a shop doesn't mean they'll find you. Later today, one of my products will be spotlighted in a online gift guide. I am working on a couple more marketing ideas..like if you post a link in your blog or twitter about a product in my store, I will give you 20% discount. I also will be asking mom blogs and craft blogs if they will spotlight one of my products and in return I will offer a free giveaway for a drawing for their readers. (Is anyone interested in doing that?)

Out of the products that I have so far (which I am trying to expand and keep it seasonal), my hybrid car bingo game & weather chart cards have sold the most - and when I say 'most' I mean 3 copies (since January).

It's hard to say what will sell. I guess I would say make it unique. For you, doing needlework, I would love to see simple needlework hand towels, little onesies, cards, etc.

We can talk more offline about marketing ideas, if you decide to set up shop.

hmmm, have only been there a couple of times Sally, back when I was really into craft and quilting but since digiscrapping haven't been back there! I AM on the look out for a laptop bag though, preferably a crafted one to fit a 18.4" screen! LOL! I had a quick look on ebay and the couple that I found were hexy for finished product, straight out of the factory drab black! I have HEAPS of material and could make one myself but haven't found any suitable (and simple) patterns as yet. I was thinking on going onto Etsy to see if it had these types of products.

elisa, yes!!! love me some good photography!

ohhh tina, thanks for the ideas!!! (i totally will do a craft giveaway on my blog for you!! :))

Ona!! I have an 18.4 laptop, too...when you find one you like, let me know!! THere is NOTHING out there thatis stylish for these monsters!! :)

hmmmm.....to be honest I haven't bee4n to Etsy...will have to go check it out!

Good Luck with your new venture :) Wooot Wooot! Will you be selling quilts??? ;) Just curious......as you know I am in love with your quilts!

Oooh I love etsy! I've been using it mainly for fabrics and prints so far, for my son's WIP woodland themed bedroom. But I'm always on the look out for whatever might pop at me.

I think if you go for quality instead of quantity, that is a huge sell. I'm wary of etsy because whoever can sew together a couple pieces of fabrics if they really want to, but precision, straight sewing lines etc Close up pics of those, are a huge factor for me.

Good luck and keep us updated!

Ok, ladies! I found a shop on Etsy and she does handbags, messenger bags, camera bags, and . . . laptop sleeves and bags! Just checked and she has evidently moved her Etsy shop to her own store. I gave her all the measurements, and she made a sleeve and messenger style laptop bag for my 17" laptop, with pockets for the charger which is huge, my Wacom tablet, mouse, zipper pockets for papers, etc, etc. I got to pick the fabrics (!!).

Would be glad to share photos if you're interested. I love mine!

I've never gotten anything from esty before. I was tempted by Tina's counting book among the thousands of other goodies to be had.

Thank you, Kym, for your compliment on the Counting Book.
I was thinking of a way to get you and others "over the edge".

How about if you blog, Facebook or Twitter about one of the items in my Etsy shop, you get 15% off any item in my shop?

Just put it in the notes section of your purchase. I will refund the 15% back to you via PayPal.

For Che, who already purchased the Counting Book, I will give you 15% back as well.

That's the place I got mine. I haven't forgotten, just have to upload photos. I went with a black background that has large white polka dots for the messenger bag, the flap and laptop sleeve are a hot pink and black damask on white.
