I’m Dorina, and I’m the host of this month’s challenge! For June, I’ve chosen a theme that felt deeply connected to the season and rich with creative potential: Light & Shadow — both in the literal and symbolic sense.
June brings us the longest days of the year (in the Northern Hemisphere), filled with golden sunlight and glowing evenings. It’s a time when light feels endless — but look closely, and you’ll see the beauty of contrast: the play of shadow beneath trees, the way dusk softens even the brightest afternoon. Light may dominate, but shadow is always there — in the physical world and in our personal stories. That contrast inspired me to explore this theme. I wanted to create a space where we can explore both the light and the shadow in our lives — where joy and sorrow, sunlight and shadow, can all find their place on the same page.
As a geographer and someone who’s always been fascinated by the wonders of our planet, I can’t resist slipping in a few Earth facts whenever I get the chance. So here’s a tiny seasonal tidbit: the June solstice—also known as the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere—happens between June 20 and 22 each year. It marks the start of summer and the longest day of the year here in the north. Conversely, in the Southern Hemisphere, it marks the beginning of winter and the shortest day of the year. Just one of the many beautiful rhythms of our Earth.
That brings me back to the challenge...

Create a page that captures light and shadow, either literally or metaphorically.
You might focus on:
- A visual interpretation (sunlight, shadows, contrast);
- A moment of joy and/or a moment of struggle;
- A memory that holds both brightness and difficulty;
- An inner duality within yourself — light and dark parts of your personality or emotions.
I’ve come up with different ways you can explore “Light & Shadow”:
1. Visual (literal sense)
- Play with light and shadow in your photos: silhouettes, backlighting, natural shadows
- Use high contrast in your design: black and white, light vs. dark color palette
- Highlight shadows and light reflections in your layout
- A happy moment that hides a deeper feeling
- A hopeful experience that followed something painful
- The contrast between how things looked and how they felt
- Morning brightness vs. evening solitude
- Something you love but also struggle with
- A normal day that had both highs and lows
- Light and shadow within your personality
- An aspect of yourself you’ve come to accept or are still working on
- Moments of balance, growth, and self-awareness
- Use quotes, poems, or journaling that reflect on contrast, duality, or inner balance
- Mix visual light/dark with meaningful text
On my page, I explored the interplay of light and shadow — both visually and symbolically. I used strong contrasts in color, deepening the dark areas and brightening the light ones to emphasize their difference and connection. The entire composition is a study in duality: where brightness meets darkness, and one gives meaning to the other. In the journaling, I reflected on the relationship between light and shadow in a more symbolic sense — how they coexist not only in the world around us, but also within our experiences and emotions. Through contrast adjustments and intentional color choices, I aimed to create a page that feels meaningful — a visual metaphor for the idea that light and shadow don’t just exist side by side, they define one another.
