I see from our other thread that this might be a good thread to have. Let's hear your thoughts on handling, sorting, and storing old and digital photos. I have so few physical photos that I am not overwhelmed with them. I have already scanned my mother's photos and done a printed Shutterfly album and a coffee mug for her. Likewise, I did an album for a cousin on my mother's side that she had printed where she lives and bound in albums for her sisters and nephew. The printer was in awe of what we can do electronically and felt honored to do that for her. Barb doesn't have the patience to do the scrapbooking but she is an amazing researcher and has the most fabulous old photos!
So, I will simply say that as I scanned the physical photos I place them in an acid free wooden photo box. It is not stained inside and specially sealed so as to not damage the photos. IT is light free when closed. I have a slot for each of my 4 major family branches. I will probably not outgrow that box.
For digital photos, I have a folder in each of my family research folders and drop them into those folders. I haven't yet added them to my family tree software but will when I get my 20TB EHD. Once they are attached to the file, the photos can't be moved or it breaks the link. I also have them in a backup file on my desktop computer and on an additional EHD. I may think about cloud storage, but for now, my off-site storage is a copy of my files, regularly updated, held by my cousin Barb.
