Halloween

clarabear

always chatty at the O!!
So...I know not everyone celebrates Halloween, but for those that do what are you doing. And if your kids dress up, what are they going to be. I usually make my kids costumes and for some reason I just cannot wrap my brain around Halloween this year and have not even come up with a plan. Horrible.

Thanks for starting this thread!!! I love to see little kids at halloween...we live in a big neighborhood, and I always buy about $40 worth of candy...YES we get that many little goblins!!!

My little ones are going to be:

Cameran: Vampire
Jesse: ScoobyDoo
Jaiden: Minnie Mouse
Savannah: A little bitty pumpkin!!

AAAh I would LOVE to celebrate Halloween. We have a similar thing on November 11th, kids come and sing for you at your door with a selfmade little lamp. And thet get candy, but no dressing up and no scary stuff. Shame, would be so much fun!

Halloween isn't that big here in the UK, but it's growing year-by-year and I for one LOVE IT!!!! Although I'm a too old for dress-up, I do decorate my home, I make traditional toffee apples & gift wrap them for friends ... best of all, I always have at least one carved pumkin in the house!!!

Oooh, yep. Would LOVE to celebrate it!! We do have pumpkins, that we're going to carve. :D

The little girls want to be cowgirls. FIne with me its easy and they can keep warm, in Michigan we NEVER know what the weather will be like. I am making GUnar dress up at Shrek with Chase as Donkey and I'll be Fionna. I may dress our dog up as Dragon. This year we are going trick or treating for the first time. In the past we've gone to the event at our church, but I want to mix it up and let the kids try trick or treating this year :).

No costumes yet. I think Shaun may want to go as something from Star Wars Clone Wars...or whatever that is...:-) Sydney was talking about Jasmine...but I'm sitting in Iowa on October 9th with the furnace on, drinking hot green tea. I don't think that the weather will allow for Jasmine at the end of the month.

Ben had a hat, handkerchief, and whistle, so I went and bought overalls at the Osh Kosh store (50% off...$12) and he's going to be an engineer. He's way into trains right now. I think we are going to do his bday theme like that too.

I usually try to dress up with him (Pooh, Safari explorer, Jessie...), so I was stumped for a little while on what to be this year. I finally got it. I bought an $8 Conductor hat on Amazon, pulled out my black suit coat and white shirt, grabbed a whistle and a hole punch. I'm the conductor. =)

Usually we have gone to my cousin's house, but I don't know what we are doing this year. We have lots of places to choose from.

Hi!!

I am gonna be a witch. I have not dressed up in like ten years when I dressed as a pirate and went to a party only to be the only one dressed up.

Every year my mom dressed me as a witch (what a meanie) except that year I was a bunny but I am going back to the basics and being a witch. Molly is gonna be a black cat. The boys are dressing as ironman and batman.

I totally agree!!

Imke is always so proud at her little lamp! Last year it was the first time she went for 'sint maarten'.

Sint Maarten.. hm... I'll try to explain, (other Dutchies.. Correct me if I'm wrong ;) )
There used to be a knight (at least I think it was a knight) that was going 'somewhere' with his horse. And he saw a homeless man. It was winter and cold. So Maarten cut his cape in two pieces, and gave this homeless man a piece.

Something like that it should be
It is all about sharing. When I was little, people gave oranges, nuts, and sometimes candy. Now almost everybody gives candy.
We make these little 'lampion' with a light in it. And walk, like with halloween, next to the doors. We sing little songs, and get candy.

This is an image from google: http://www.schoolbieb.nl/uploadedImages/images/DOSSIERS PO/Godsdienst/4618.jpg I checked my photos. I noticed that I don't have any from Imke's first time *eek* I need to remember to make EXTRA many this year!

Wow Yvon...those lanterns are so beautiful!!!! and what a sweet sentiment!!

I love the story...it's a great thing to share!! and to teach the kids too!!

and here it's all about scaring the crap out of everyone!! buhahahahaha!! I think we have managed to misplace some values over here!!!

But the kids love it!! and the little bitty ones always look so cute dressed up!! I love passing out the candy to all the little goblins at my door!

Oh, and after that, it is 'sinterklaas'. On december 6th.
Looks a bit like santa clause, but also different!

Here are photos from Imke with 'zwarte piet' and 'Sinterklaas'.
*browsing through my photos I see this one, Imke was 1 and half years old, we put down her shoe with carrots for the horse.*

I love Oscraps. I love learning about other people's lives....lives from all over the world. Thanks for sharing Yvonna!

Wow Yvon thank you so much for sharing!!!! I love this!!!

Nick is being a Ninja Turtle for Halloween....because he loves turtles! So cute! We only go to a few houses on the street and DH helps him get appropriate candy - the rest we trade out when he gets home for something else :) The best thing is our neighbors are sooo fabulous they know his allergy and usually have something safe for him even without us asking. Love them!

Kat...that is wonderful that your neighbors think of Nick like that!!

Yvon....WOW!! I wanna come over there and celebrate!! Those are some seriously awesome photos...TFS!! and love the carrots in the shoe..hehehe!!

ITA Sara....that's what makes it such a great place here!!!

Kat, how nice of your neighbours!!
What kind of allergy does he has? I'm sorry if you wrote it somewhere, because than I've missed it

It indeed is lovely that a forum like this has so many people from over the world. And just by asking (simple) question we learn a lot from eachother :D

Yvon...I agree with Linda W! WOW!!

Kat, can't wait to see the Ninja turtle scrapping. And I'm so glad that you have such good neighbors. I sure wish that we were all neighbors at the O cul-de-sac. We could all just let the kids go out around the O circle and trick-or-treat all evening! And then we could get ready for Sint Maarten to come.

He has a severe nut allergy which really makes Halloween a difficult holiday since trick or treating is all about candy :) A lot of candy in the states is made with nuts, Peanut butter or run on a line with nuts. I have found a handful this year though that is safe so I am soooo excited!!

Linda!!! Oh my word I would love that!!!! the O cul-de-sac would be the best neighborhood ever!!!

Yay!! I figured out what Addie is going to be for Halloween!! And I thought of a challenge (LindaW check your PM)

So the other day we were sitting in the car and out of the blue Addie asked me if she was a Rock Star and I said she was...because as you all know that's what I say...so guess what Addie is going to be...yep a pumpkin...just kidding, of course she's going to be a rock star. Awesome. yay!!

Aww that is difficult! Good you found some safe candy!! Hope he enjoys it!
