Some of my favorite vacation memories are of our Christmas holidays each year to Sanibel Island, Florida. We went there for many years and and stayed in the same condo right on the Inland Waterway. We weren't right on the Gulf, but our location was so perfect and just a short walk to the Gulf beach. We could see the Sanibel Causeway Bridge from our condo. Sanibel Island still has a special place in our hearts and it's especially magical at Christmas time.

My other special memories are of the times my hubby and I visited Jamaica and our trip to Germany and Austria. What a wonderful trip that was!

Ohhhh yes! We spent lots of summer time up at GP's lakefront cottage on Lake Erie- Sandusky, Marblehead, and CEDAR POINT!!!!!!! (Amusement Park with world's best rollercoasters). Second to that would be going to Key West , & Islamorada, Fla where my Grandparents lived in the winter. We also went to St. Augustine. :D

I wish my body could still handle roller coasters. Going to Cedar Point was an annual affair for most of my life, but I haven't been in a couple of decades.

My favorite vacation memories are going to visit my aunt and uncle in Massachusetts when we were kids. They lived in the mountains just outside of Lenox and my uncle would throw all of us in the back of his pickup truck and take us everywhere. Getting up at 4am or so to start the 12-14hr car trip to get there is part of that...to this day one of my favorite smells is the way the air smells at that time of night (day?). We used to go every couple of years or so.

As a young child mom would take all 4 kids to the far north of Alberta via train to stay the summer on my grandparents farm. I did that until my grandparents came to live with us. Swimming in the river, baling hay, riding horses and racing thunderstorms was heaven.

Vacation memories are the best! One of my favorite memories is our first family vacation in the summer of '67! My parents didn't have a lot of money then but they bought a little camper and our family of four traveled with my aunt, uncle and cousin from Iowa to the Badlands, the Black Hills and Yellowstone. My aunt and uncle and cousin stayed in motels along the way but we made it quite a trip and as I type this out, I realize that vacation set the tone for all of my traveling throughout my life. I wish that my aunt were here so that I could tell her. I have lots of pictures from that vacation---and this thread has inspired me to dig them out and scrap that trip---so thanks @Cherylndesigns.

And, I had to add a few more...Rockies in Colorado, Smokies in Tennessee, Oahu as a single lady followed by several trips to Maui with my family, Europe most recently...and of course, the two trips to China when we met our children! Yes...I've had some very good travels!

One of my favorite vacation trip memory is the last one the family took with all 7 of us in the summer of 1974. (Kids ages: 18, 15,12,11, 9.) We loaded up the family in the 3/4 ton truck with a large cabover camper and made a 4000 mile - 3 week trip from San Diego up to Sequoia and Kings Canyon in CA. Then down and around to camp on the east side of mountains and exploring the caverns there; crossing the desert to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Over to visit Mesa Verde and the cliff dwellings; stopping at 4-Corners of NM, AZ, CO,Utah with the kids standing in each of the states; camping overnight in a pull-out along the mountain road near Taos; stop at Philmont Boy Scout camp at Cimarron, NM. Stopped to visit with my family in Tucumcari. Then down to Carlsbad Caverns and start the westbound trip (across the southern part of New Mexico, Arizona and California) camping in the dessert then in the Laguna mountains and finally back home in San Diego. Along the way, we had several adventures... having Momma bear and her cubs come into the campfire talk in Sequoia; the oven blow up in my face (singeing the hair around my face and burning my eyebrows) 4 days into the trip + 1 kid came down with 3-day measles the same day; 2 different truck problems; meeting and talking to Tony Hillerman (author) in Tuba City; even our dog being attacked by mosquitoes along side the river which lead to us moving on and camping in a mountain roadside pullout that night; suffering from heat exhaustion (no A/C in truck/camper); spending nights around campfires with the kids and telling family stories: but best of all - spending lots of time with the family exploring all the parks, byways and sights along the way.

We were on vacation in Sicily .... We planned a trip to Corleone to return via the coast .... It was a terribly hot day ....
My husband had entered the route into our gps .... the gps sent us down a very steep track and the car sputtered seriously .... when we were 5 km outside the swtad - in the middle of nowwhere we had engine trouble with the rental car .... due to the bright sunlight we could not see on the GPS which road we were driving .... we had to call the breakdown service but we don't really speak Italian ....
The closest house was a kilometer away ... I went there anyway to ask for help ... especially for the phone call to the breakdown service ....
We ended up there with a very friendly family ... with all their might they pushed the car to their driveway ... The breakdown service was called .... our conversation happened via google translate .... they did not speak English and we hardly know any Italian. We had to wait over two hours for the tow truck...
Meanwhile it was time for lunch ... we were invited to join them for dinner ... and enjoy their homemade wine. There was a birthday boy in the house - and there was cake for dessert...
Such a hospitality....

Oh, Angie, that sounds wonderful and I get it about the smell of the air - I still smell Sanibel.

I can imagine what wonderful memories you must have of the farm, Kythe. I would have LOVED doing that as a child!

Isn't it wonderful how these threads bring back such wonderful memories? That sounds like so much fun, Linda and what a blessing to still have lots of pictures!! I hope you scrap some of them sometime!

Ohhhhhh, I've got goosebumps about your trips to China. How wonderful those trips turned out to be!! I LOVE The Smokies - I've been there several times and finally made it to The Rockies.

Ohhhhh, Kay, I SO loved reading this! It sounds completely wonderful - well, you did meet with some "tests" along the way, but wonderful at any rate. You could write a book about this - or make a movie. The fact that it was in the days before AC in the truck and things weren't so "easy" back them, despite it all - it's such a wonderful memory. Thanks, so much for sharing this story!

Oh, my goodness, Marijke - that could have ended so badly - you being in the middle of nowhere. I can picture everybody pushing that car and how wonderful to end up at a place where they were so hospitable! That's a wonderful story and I'm so happy that everything turned out so well.

Yeah, I have a deep love for lakes- I can easily bring up the scent of Lake Erie. We had such a wonderful place to stay. Grandpa built the redwood cottage. It had front windows like thisfa34fb333e3d82c77ea1aedcf6c6fec4-491191279.jpg
that faced the lakefront. At night you could see all the ships/boats lights, docks and fireflies. It was a magical place. We hope to get up there for first opening next year. I kinda want to do a trip down memory lane. :D We honeymooned at the cottage (Grandparents passed and left it to Mom), and went to CP and the winery in Norwalk. #kissIts been 40 years!!!

My parents liked to go camping and we went often throughout the spring til fall. We even went winter camping once in Northern Ontario. That is one of my fave vacation memories. We had a heater for our pop-up tent. We dug a hole in the snow to create a barrier around the tent. We even went swimming for a few minutes and then warmed up around the fire. We went ice fishing and snowmobiling.
