Hi girls! xxxx Yes, we are okay in our new place in Tasmania. On the mainland it is a totally different thing. All of my family and friends up in the north of New South Wales are all okay at the moment, however my younger son lives on a rural property and was threatened by fire on three fronts at one stage. Together with the fireys he was able to save his place but he said he had everything packed ready to flee if the wind had changed direction. He hasn't unpacked his belongings yet!
The fires are simply diabolic this season, much more intense and made much worse by the extra dry conditions due to drought etc. A little town out of Grafton has just disappeared! A beautiful lodge, Binnaburra, nestled in the rain forest in southern Qld, a place I used to go to 30 odd years ago, has totally gone. The main lodge, along with all the smaller cabins as well. This place was built in the early 1900's.......its RAIN forest for goodness sakes!!!
Down south, in New South Wales, right on the coast, another little place called Mogo has been devastated as well. It was a small community with little quaint shops along the main street...... there was a lovely little craft shop where I always to buy some scrapbook paper whenever my sister and I went down the South Coast for a weekend. A little way away there was a small zoo that used to cater to the tourists as well. Not sure if they were able to save the animals or not, at one stage I did read where the staff were staying put and not evacuating. It really is totally surreal. Places have been burned out that have never been touched in recorded history, rain forests that contained ancient hundred+ year old trees are just gone.
And of course the loss of all of our native animals. I have read where it has estimated that over 480 million animals have perished. My mind just can't take in the vastness of it all. As I said, it is just so surreal. Our fire season should ONLY be just starting, and yet the fires started some 3.5 months ago........ I keep getting teary with reading about all the loss of life, both human and animal, just feeling so helpless at times. Donating to every fund I find, but even that doesn't feel like much.
On top of all that we have this pitiful man who is supposed to be the leader of Australia!! going off on a jaunt to Hawaii for a holiday so he could surprise his kids for Christmas?? really?? I think the kids would have understood the necessity of having to cancel the holiday in light of what is happening?? Then he justifies his behaviour by saying that 'what could he have done if he had stayed??!!" I compare him with the NZ Prime Minister and find there is really NO comparison!!!!
Sorry, I didn't mean to rant on, it's just a very emotional time for everyone down here but I think we all are very grateful for all the help we are getting from around the world and receiving your wishes and love is wonderful!! xxxxx
