DIY = do it yourself: the activity of decorating or repairing your home, or making things for your home yourself, rather than paying someone else to do it for you.
If you're reading this you're obviously already a maker and do-er; but I'm thinking of the term as it relates to home maintenance. I love to fix and do things for myself---I have repaired appliances, laid laminate flooring, painted walls, built shelving from scratch, etc. Having just moved into a new home this past fall, I am proud of the fact that I just finished redoing my bath myself-new paint which included fixing holes; replacing the light fixture, towel bars, even installing a new granite vanity top with new plumbing fixture.
Part of it is the satisfaction of doing the work; a large part of it is not spending the money to pay someone to do something that I can do myself. On the other hand, a popular local radio host who was a Master Handyman used to say that sometimes the most powerful tool in your toolbox was your checkbook.
Would you call yourself a DIYer?
