Hi-
Is there a way to have a thread open with the first post and not the last most recent one.
I'm getting very confused, as it is all backwards to me.

Yep, go into your CP Panel, choose 'Edit Options' Scroll down until you see 'Thread display mode' and change the drop down to 'Linear-Oldest First'
