We had to kill time before our room was ready. We visited Alamosa NWR before lunch and Monte Vista NWR after lunch. The first wildlife we saw was a pair of jackrabbits. We also saw a pair of bitterns, our first ever ruddy ducks and baby coots. We also saw lots of baby Canada geese. Weather was moody
I agree, the lighting is wonderful and her expression is too. Love how the greenery wanders across the page and hints of purple and pink from the fire in the background.
The more I read, the more promising the area around the Alamosa NWR looked for us to explore. It was the first refuge I knew of that listed elk, deer, jackrabbits and coyotes among its residents. Probably the reason we didn't know about it was that we weren't in the birder community.
Along with Alamosa NWR, Monte Vista NWR was often mentioned and the two plus Baca NWR the San Luis Valley National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The runoff and ground water flows from the three mountain ranges surrounding the San Luis Valley are crucial to these refuges.
