Venice Canal - HDR Photography

This photo is for everyone who has left me numerous comments about how much they have enjoyed my travel photos, and in particular to those who especially like to see Venice in all it's beauty.

The photo you see in this layout is done using a technique called HDR (High Dynamic Range). It is done by taking multiple exposures of the same image - typically using a tripod as it is imperative to get a series of bracketed photos to reduce 'ghosting' in the merged photos. Usually to achieve the best results, you require a minimum of three (3) images, although there is a lot of debate over shooting more exposures at different shutter speeds (i.e. 5 or even 7 bracketed images) but the jury is still out on this. Personally, I use 3 for the majority unless the lighting is poor and in fact this image is a composite of 3 merged images. The original image is presented for comparison in the top right corner (based on the neutral exposure - or in plain english, what you would see straight out of the camera without being underexposed or overexposed). The original has absolutely no post processing whatsoever. The end result, after using HDR software (and there are multiple products that can achieve this such as Photoshop, Photomatix Pro, or Nik Software HDREfex Pro) is what you see here.

This is for Ann, Diane, Irene, and Heather to name just a few - I hope you enjoy and for anyone in the gallery who would like to know more about HDR photography, I would only be to happy to answer your questions :)

The only regret is that this file size does the image no justice whatsoever...so if you like this, you should see it in the original size !!

Cheers,

Hello M. I love this example, how fantastic to see all these details, great HDR processing on the image too. Great explanations you just did about it. I like to keep going on this trend of HDR especially now that we can do a lot of the processing in CS5. Thank you for the dedicated page. Ann
