The California Building

A walk through Balboa Park is an amazing trek through history. Many of these buildings were built 100 years ago for the Panama-California Exposition which took place in 1915 to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal. The buildings are magical very intricate with grand arches, gorgeous tile work, stone engravings and intricate sculptures adorning their facades. This is something that I have not fully researched, but my love for history wants me to learn more, and I plan on doing many pages to showcase this wonderful park. Amazingly, many of the buildings were expected to be temporary structures, but some of these were kept, and some rebuilt in permanence to their original glory.

Journaling reads: Built for the Panama-California Exposition in 1915, which celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal, the California Building is an Architectural masterpiece designed by Bertram Goodhue, mixing the Plateresque, Baroque, Churriguereque, and Rococo Architecture, along with the Spanish-Colonial with hints of Gothic influence. It was the entry-way to the Exposition, and now, 100 years later, it is the home of the San Diego Museum of Man.

My Process: I began with one of the Artsy Papers from AP Explore. I placed the photo over the white area of the artsy paper and used Inverse Masking to blend it unto the page. I placed the photo on blend mode color burn. I then copied the photo, and used blend mode multiply for the top copy of the photo. I then painted out portions of this photo, leaving mostly the building, and some of the trees. I copied this photo, and placed this one on blend mode normal, reduced its opacity, and masked out all but the building. I wanted to place a large title, so at this point I scaled the entire page down, placing it in the upper left corner. I then placed another copy of the same artsy paper underneath, and blended out the edges of the scaled down artsy paper. In my research I had obtained a few internet images from the time of the exposition. I used the stamp frame from AP Wanderlust for one image, and the circular frame from AP Shine for the circular emblem. I placed them both with the woodword, MM flower and the WordTransfers. I then began filling in some of the areas my adding transfers, and artstroks. Iadded the large title, adding a stroke and custom shadow. I took the sun charm and added it to one of the strokes of the title, by masking the ribbon out. I nestled the journaling up against the photo and around the title alpha, and was done!!!
