The Bean

Most big cities have public art work that defines them in some way; Chicago seems to have more than most, and some of those have very colorful nicknames--the Flamingo, the Picasso, Snoopy in a Blender. Cloud Gate is the official name of the sculpture depicted on this page, but nearly everyone in Chicago affectionately calls it The Bean because of its shape. The Bean is the centerpiece of the AT&T Plaza in Millennium Park, and boy, is it cool! Constructed of 168 stainless steel plates welded together, and standing at 33 feet deep by 66 feet tall by 42 feet long (10m by 20m by 13m), its highly polished exterior has no visible seams. Believe me, we looked! :) Its shape does fun distortions to reflected light that have to be seen up close and personal. That's Mr. Squeak in the foreground, heading over to have a look for himself.

Thanks for stopping by!
FAB contrast between sketchy bg and photo version of bean and Mr. Squeak! Shirley, I'm really enjoying your tour of Chicago landmarks and highlights!
