Journaling reads: There are 7 caves in La Jolla at the base of the cliffs by the La Jolla Cove. Sunny Jims Cave is the only one accessible by means other than water. In 1903, a German born artist and geologist had a 145 foot tunnel dug by hand. In those days, there were no steps. In 1920, 145 steps, and a hand rail made of wood were installed which lead down to one of the 7 caves. It is accessible by going through a curio shop above. Used during prohibition to smuggle alcohol and Chinese immigrants. All 7 caves are accessible by water, and there are kayak excursions which go out daily to explore the caves.
