Christmas is approaching, and I find myself reflecting on what this season truly means to me. I’m not religious, so we don’t celebrate Christmas in a traditional or spiritual sense. For me, it’s never been about nativity scenes or attending church services. Instead, it’s about something simpler—something more personal.
But as the holiday season ramps up, I can’t help but wonder: where did all the excessive gift-giving come from? The frantic shopping sprees, the endless lists, the stress over finding the ‘perfect’ gift—it all feels so unnecessary. Somewhere along the way, Christmas seems to have shifted from a time of connection to a race for consumption.
Don’t get me wrong, I love giving. But it’s not about piling up presents under a tree until you can’t see the floor anymore. For me, Christmas is a time for family, for bonding, for togetherness. It’s about giving small tokens of appreciation—a handwritten note, a jar of homemade jam, or even just your undivided attention.
