About a thousand years ago, Puebloan peoples built a Chacoan style Great House at Bluff. Signs close to the quiet town say: Bluff, Utah, established 650 A. D. Historians consider the Hole-in-the-Rock Expedition one of the most extraordinary wagon trips ever undertaken in North America and a fine example of pioneer spirit. Many sections of the trail were almost impassable. To allow wagon passage, the men spent 6 weeks blasting and chiseling a path through a narrow, 1,200 foot drop in the sandstone cliffs known as the Hole-in-the-Rock, which is still visible at present day Lake Powell. Bluff is surrounded by public and state land for 40 miles to the north and west. South, across the San Juan River, sprawls the 17 million-acre Navajo Reservation. Though a few thousand people probably lived in Bluff 10 centuries ago, now there are just 200 residents. The night sky is so clear here that nearby Natural Bridges National Monument has been named a night sky park by the Park Service.

Journaling:
Butler Wash Road was muddy and rutted with fords and detours. The road to Cold Spring Cave was washed out, so we drove farther north and hiked to Fishmouth Cave. We visited smaller ruin sites along the way and found a few potsherds. Remember lunch with taleggio cheese.
