Pathological Consumption

I've been reflecting on the sad fact that our economy is driven to a large extent by the tradition of giving useless junk during the holiday season. The word art and journaling (which you can't really see) come from a very articulate, thought-provoking essay by George Mobiot in The Guardian dated December 2012 (google guardian christmas george monbiot 2012 - it's called "On the 12th day of Christmas your gift will just be junk" and on Mr. Mobiot's blog it's called "The gift of death" dated 12/10/2012.

I agree with you big time. My shopping list has shrunk tremendously and no junk. Needed items or things I make with lots of love. Almost each is matched by a gift to a ministry or charity. We can change the world a little at a time without having to give up the joy of giving gifts to those we love.
