In November of 1955, Dad was sent as part of a control team to Kwajalein Naval Air Station (NAS) for 12 days TDY.
Kwajalein Atoll is part of the March Islands. Its total area is about 6 square miles and is one of the worlds largest coral reefs.
With the need for the continued operation of the military in the case of nuclear war and the need for real-time intelligence and communications SACs approach was that operators should be trained, the equipment ready, and the system already operating beforehand as it would in an emergency.
The idea was that communications traffic would not be increased and detected by the enemy. In February 1954 SAC began to send commanders, staff, and control teams to various places around the world. They would prepare and send actual operations-reporting-type messages. Aircraft were also physically deployed and sent on strike missions.
