Dad first applied for the Officer Candidate Extension Course on 11 October 1951 it took 5 years for him to complete the course of study. On 23 May 1956 he was awarded his diploma. When I first came across this document in 2004, I could not help but wonder why didnt Dad take a commission as an officer? Like most decisions in life there was not just one reason. He now had a wife and a child on the way. His current enlistment was up on the 23rd of June 1956. He was offered a $3000.00 bonus if he re-enlisted for another six years. I asked Dad why he didnt take a commission. As an officer you have no control over the jobs you are assigned. You could be put in charge of the commissary or supply. I did not want to change specialties. Dad loved what he did. I remember talking with him during the first Gulf War, twenty years after he left active duty. I mentioned that as an air traffic controller we had been involved with the practice exercises that the military conducted prior to the commencement of Operation Desert Storm. He said he would love to be in the communications tents listening to what was going on.
Not long ago I came across some notes Dad wrote about the beginning of his marriage. He talked about how he and Mom decided that staying in the Air Force until he was eligible to retire would offer the family security.
