Journaling reads:
I had a weekend in DC between business trips and met up with Ngiste to visit the Newseum. It was four stories of heart wrenching and amazing exhibits dedicated to the first amendment and journalism. We took a little tour with a docent and one other visitor from Washington state. My favorite exhibit was the Pulitzer Prize photo exhibit. Wow - it left me speechless. The 9-11 exhibit displayed the front pages from 9-12 newspapers as a backdrop to the crumpled radio spire from one of the towers. We did the 4-D movie which was a sensorial experience. I was so proud to see a display from the war protesting students from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines (Go Iowa!). The display celebrating the Constitutional amendment that gave women the right to vote made me reflect on how far womens rights have advanced in the last 100 years. It is hard to imagine that my grandmother was given the vote when she was 20 years old. The printing press next to our constitution as well as other displays of typesetting and publishing tools were a nice tribute to both of my grandfathers who worked for the Des Moines Register & Tribune. It was interesting that the weekend I visited was also the weekend our congress shut down the government - a tribute to the freedoms we are endowed with (even when used ridiculously). I just had to use the lyrics of Paul Yarrow/s song to underscore how important our freedom is. Maybe someday my children will see this page and remember singing this song along with Peter, Paul and Mary belting from the CD payer (pre-iPhones) on our amazing road trips - from sea to shining sea.
