Journaling:

Santa Claus House was the creation of Con Miller. Shortly after Miller & his family arrived in Fairbanks, Alaska in 1949 he began dressing up as Santa Claus each Christmas to the delight of all the village children. In 1952 Miller decided it was time to build a trading post located 13 miles southeast of Fairbanks in an area known as the North Pole. On 15 January 1953, the City of North Pole was incorporated. While Miller was building his trading post a local boy who recognized Miller as Santa Claus approached him to say hello. Hello, Santa Claus! Are you building a new house? It was at that moment Miller had a name for his new trading post. It would be called Santa Claus House. The Santa Claus House of 1958 was located at 511 Santa Claus Lane just off the old Richardson Highway where it remained until 1972 when the state rerouted the highway and Santa Claus House was moved out to the new Richardson Highway.

Mom along with Tom & Helen Fredericks took John and I on an overnight trip to the North Pole to visit Santa at the Santa Claus House. Located in North Pole, Alaska, 370 miles from Elmendorf Air Force Base it was at least a 7-hour road trip. The black & white photographs below are dated 22 December 1958 while the color slide to the left is dated 23 December 1958. This actually makes sense because it would have been dark when we reached the North Pole on the 22nd. It was after all just one day after the shortest day of the year. Sunset was at 13:40 hours. The color slide would have been taken on our way home. Sunrise on the 23rd was at 09:59 hours.

I asked mom about this trip she remembers going to Santa Claus House. When I asked if dad went with us, she said she didnt think so. She thought he was working. The 22nd was a Monday. Where we spent the night of the 22nd is a mystery.

This is so fun and an amazing story! Your mom was quite the adventurer to take you to the north pole :)

Fascinating. Love the slide. Remarkable color. How cool that you got to visit the north pole and Santa Claus House.
