Moms Letters 16 May 1958 page 1

I have left mom's punctuation and spelling errors as was originally written.

Dear Folks,

Guess youre wondering how we all survived the boat trip. Well we made it & all in one piece. Arrived here at Anchorage on Monday May 12 but we docked at Whittier on Sunday about 6:00 P.M. Since there is only one train a day out of Whittier we had to stay over on the boat another nite. Cant or couldnt complain about the boat trip at all.

We left the Hostess House about 8:30 Thursday morning on a hectic 10 minute ride to the pier & boarded the Gen M M Patrick with both kids crying, fishing pole sticking someplace & suitcases budging & tied with string. (I know I never could have done it alone.) Our stateroom was small but nice After adding a crib we had to back out if we walked in frontwards but that was okay. One of [the] ditty bags arrived with tag & handle missing with baby food falling out. Guess thats how they knew it was ours.

After dropping the kids & backing out the door we proceeded to explore the ship. I got lost every time I went anywhere until the last day. That first day we had a fire drill & abandon ship drill. You should have seen us all decked out in life jackets, including Ann & the baby. Ann cried from the time we put it on her until we took it off. Poor thing.

Before the drill we had lunch aboard that was most delicious as were all the meals. They had at least 7 courses at each meal, all food was hot and very tasty. Had steak & mushrooms one day, ham, pork chops etc.

Late the first day yours truly started to get a little seasick. I kept telling myself that I cant, I cant & after taking a short nap I was fine. As usual Ann wasnt eating. We only had a half hour to eat so no time to coax her. We were on the 2nd sitting for meals at 7:15 A.M., 12:15 & 5:45. Sure glad it wasnt the 1st sitting which was 45 minutes earlier. Most of the time I left Johnnie in the cabin while we eat. I tried to feed him just before we eat.

It was awfully cold outside so didnt spend much time viewing the sea. Entertainment for me consisted of feeding & changing the kids & putting them to bed. I did see 2 movies however. One was Abandon Ship that I dreamt about all nite. Tried to take Ann to a movie but that was slightly impossible as you can well imagine. It was hard enough to hear anything with the noises of the ship without trying to keep Ann quiet.

The trip wasnt the smoothest (according to some of the crew) & we hit head winds that slowed us down & made us a day late.

The whole trip cost us $10.00 for food. That included milk & baby food for Johnnie. So cant complain there.

Met several very nice couples aboard ship but only one family is stationed here at Elmendorf. Hope we see them again.

Continued.
