Le Befana is a character from Italian folklore and is present throught the Christmas season. Heres how the story goes... As the 3 wise men were on their journey to find Jesus the stopped and asked an old woman for directions but she did not know. They decided to spend the night at her place and she was very hospitable to them. In return they asked her if she would like to join them to find the Christ child. She was asked again by a shepherd and she again declined saying she was too busy. Later that night she saw a great light in the sky and decided to join them bearing gifts that had belonged to her child that had died. She got lost and never found the child in a manger. So, in Italy on the day of Epiphany it is celebrated similar to our Santa Claus and she leaves gifts for the children in their stockings and coal if they are bad. Most children will find candy coal in their stockings since all children are sometimes bad. I loved this story and brought several of these dolls home.
