Henry Hering of New York was the sculptor of the Art Deco figures carved in the sandstone pylons on the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge in Cleveland, Ohio. The 8 figures were meant to "typify the spirit of progress in transportation". Each guardian holds a different vehicle representing the history of ground transportation from a stagecoach, covered wagon and hayrack to a 1930's automobile and 4 types of trucks.
The bridge underwent a renovation in the 1980's and was renamed the Hope Memorial Bridge in honor of William Henry Hope, a local stonesman and the father of Bob Hope.
