his life and mine

i can't seem to get over the fact that the Pittsburgh of my youth is gone forever. the snippet of poetry on the page is from the poem "Refusing Heaven" by Jack Gilbert, about the 'Burgh.

He will not abandon his life.
Not his childhood,
not the ninety-two bridges
across the two rivers of his youth.
Nor the mills
along the banks where he became a young man
as he worked.
The mills are eaten away,
and eaten
again by the sun and its rusting.
He needs them
even though they are gone,
to measure against.

Powerful thought, powerful ART! Such a difficult loss, Phylis. So sorry for your pain =(

Absolutely stunning, Phylis! That photo and your treatment ... WOW! Love the orange glow of the sky and the lone red house. That poem is so evocative. My grandmother's hometown, though much smaller, suffered a similar fate as the mill town of Pittsburgh. The change and loss is so beautifully captured! Marvelous work of art!

What an incredible page celebrating a city I am learning to love. My DD and her (big) family moved there a little over a year ago. Next month I'll be making my 4th trip to PGH. You can be sure we will be returning to the OTB Bicycle Cafe on the south side for one of their hamburgers...the best I have EVER tasted. I didn't know the PGH you knew, but I sure like the one that's there now. :)

Wow. You need to make this a print. Love how you worked the fotoglows into this. . . and the brushwork on top, the tall lined overlays, the black ink splats: I get it. . this is a phenomenal piece of art, Phylis!!! (btw, the steel manufacturing here is really picking up, hope something picks up there). (btw, remember as a little girl going thru PItts. to visit my grandma, I remember the orange glow in the skies!)
