Tim and I took a trip to the Hawaiian Islands January 29 - February 9, 2005. On Sunday, February 6th, we were up at 5:30 and boarding the bus at 7:30 for the trip to the top of the mountain we can see from the hotel. Waipa (Wy-pau) is our driver/narrator. He explains we are going to the “House of the Sun” 62 miles away. The highest peak is 10,023 feet above sea level! It was cold and windy up there!
This east Maui volcano is a massive, active shield volcano that forms more than 75% of the Hawaiian Island of Maui. The western 25% of the island is formed by the volcano, Mauna Kahalawai, also referred to as the West Maui Mountains.
