Journaling reads :

I feel like I should explain why there are so many more photos of you crying,
unhappy and having tantrums than there are of your sister. It's not that
you were a sadder or more temperamental child- in fact you were usually
our ray of sunshine. And it's not that I saw your tears as a source of amuse-
ment. In fact, every time you cried, I had a hard timenot crying myself.
Actually, it was just a reflection of my changing photography style. When
Isabelle was born, I was all about posed pictures- photos that were pretty, or
cute. By the time you were a toddler, I had started to believe in photo-
graphy to document life- all of it, the good, the bad and the ugly. So,
sandwiched between the "smile for the camera" grins are the photos of
messes and uncombed hair, and, yes, even tantrums, crying and anger. In
a way this represents a maturing of my parenting style as well. No longer
do I see a crying child as a symbol of a mom not doing something right.
Sometimes you just need to cry, and I just need to let you. I don't need to
jump in and do something, anything, to make the crying stop and bring
the smile back. Sometimes, I can, and do, but sometimes the negative
emotions are a growing experience in themselves. I think it's especially
important when it's your sister making you mad (as it was in this case). I
don't want to take sides or always play the peacemaker. There will be a time
when your Dad and I aren't there to do that for you, and the sooner you
learn to do that the better. That doesn't mean that I'm going to stand by
and take pictures of you beating each other up, but sometimes me being
the passive observer is best for us all.
