American Gothic

In celebration of Labor Day weekend, I used the famous Gordon Parks photo of Ella Watson taken in 1942 in the Farm Security Administration building. He posed her with mop and broom in front of the flag, having the famous painting by Grant Wood in mind. It soon hit the front page of The Washington Post, becoming known as American Gothic. The inspiration for the page design came from the August Year of aArtPLAY videos.

Process Notes: Using a Threshold adjustment to the image and placing it on artsy paper 4, I covered it up with a reverse mask. A brush from the palette brought it back out. A artsy paint brush, of which I have several loaded, brought out a little more detail to the image. I duplicated the image once. The first image has a Hard Light blend mode and the copy has a Screen Blend mode. Also on the copy I added a Color Overlay of a shade of blue with the overlay having a Hard Light blend mode.

Between the background paper and photo I added a transfer at the top of the image then added the png leaves and blended to Hard Light. Another transfer was added running down the image from the right side.

Over the image and running down from the transfer at the top, I added a couple of artsy stains in red. The old script was placed on the left side of the image along with a splatter from Different Strokes. On the right side of the image I used a taped texture. I dont know if I can create a layout without a tape somewhere.

The title was added and duplicated. The bottom is black and using the arrow keys, moved to the right and down.

The glow over the image is blended to Color Burn with the fill opacity down to 73%, which gave it some depth. The string and flower were placed on the hand of her broom and finished the layout.
