From my May trip back to Valdez Alaska....
On March 27, 1964 a massive earthquake hit Alaska. The little town of Valdez was decimated. The day before Easter it had been a happy day. The Chena had just arrived with supplies and the townsfolk had all turned out to watch the ship unload. A couple of crewmen were filming the townspeople with their 8mm cameras when the Quake hit. Thus there are some good films available of it all happening... You can find them on YouTube. Prince William Sound (the farthest north ice free port large enough to accommodate larger ships) drained out as it hit , then flooded back with a wave 50 high swamping the Chena who went down. Everyone on the dock died... the water poured into the town reaching the 2nd floor of homes far from the waterfront... This loader looks about the same as it did 40 years ago when we moved here and 11 years after the quake.
