World Down Syndrome Day

A bit late...wanted to post this yesterday on the official World Down Syndrome Day. Needed to express my personal experience and thankfulness.

Happy, happy World Down Syndrome Day!!
Slowly but surely awareness is spreading
throughout the world. Awareness that Down syndrome
blesses and beautifies lives.
(nothingdownaboutit quote)

Journaling seemed appropriate today,
yet I debated about the level of
transparency Id share...here goes.
When we heard the diagnosis of Down Syndrome
last year, we were devastated...the news was
totally unexpected, we didnt anticipate
the possibility of a special needs child.
Not to sound impervious...just wasnt
on our radar. I hate to admit it, but I felt
a little cheated...my first and perhaps, only, grandchild.
To be quite frank, I had ordered a healthy girl.
Now we prepared for a boy (no
pink, frilly clothes) and faced the fears
of all that comes with a special needs child...
all the unknowns, all the tears, all the tight
chest feelings, the learning curves.

I poured all of it out to the Lord who listened and
validated my concerns. While Calan was still in utero,
God changed my perspective...not overnight, it took some
time. Are all grandchildren special, of course. Is this
what you expected, no. But listen carefully,
Im not giving you less, Im giving you more.
I chose Cal for you and your family.
Each of you will be blessed in ways you
dont understand now and cannot anticipate.
All of you will experience years of collective
blessing and joy through Cal. Again,
Im not giving you less,
Im giving you more.

I could feel the fear dissipate
and my heart fill til I thought it
would burst with love and gratitude for this
unborn child. Now 4 months old, Cals presence
fills me with wonder, allows me to literally see beauty
with Gods eyes, and marvel at the pureness
of the gift. Sweet Lord, thank you once again
for encouraging me in heart and uniting us in love.
Colossians 2:2
Grammi loves you, Cal!

What a beautiful page to a beautiful boy. I'm sure he will give as much love as he receives.

Every word of your journaling is truly special. I felt your range of emotions as I read them. Beautiful page, and I so glad that you felt comfortable enough to share them. hugs!

This deserves a big GSO: https://ozone.oscraps.com/forum/showthread.php?p=478322&posted=1#post478322

I write the same for you sweet Marnie as on the fanpage of Anna.
Ow Marnie, what a great journaling and page, goose bumps. I am a sentimentalist so I can't read this with dry eyes, the same I had with the page of Heather and her mother. These pages are so impressive, so beautiful, they even tell the world what also life is. I'm sure you are the greatest grammi of the world, little sweet Cal now this, feel this. Great you share this with us, thanks! Big hugs for you and Cal xxx

Couldn't have said this any better than Marleen. What a beautiful little grandson, so lucky to have a wonderful loving Grammi like you, Marnie! Beautiful page!

Wow! Your page is beautiful and very deserving of the GSO. I love to read your process of letting go and finding the joys. His spirit shines.

Humbling, moving and truthful I find your page Marnie, delighted to see what a beautiful Grandma and family Calan has, I particularly love the following...allows me to literally see beauty
with Gods eyes, and marvel at the pureness
of the gift. Sweet Lord, Lovely in all dimension!

Oh Marnie. I am sorry that you had to deal with this - and yes it is a shock. Everyone expects a strong healthy child and when you are given a "special needs" child it is a challenge as you don't know what lies ahead. My boys' school has a Downs Syndrome 'department' (not sure what to call it!) and the boys are constantly telling me how wonderful the children are and sweet, kind, gorgeous. Yes Cal is different but he is just as cute if not more so. You'll learn to cope with this and you will be an extra special Grandma because of it. Clearly you adore Cal and he will adore you, his special Grandma. xxxx What a gorgeous page and that sweet photo! BEautiful.
