Journaling reads: Belmont Park was built in 1925 by sugar magnate John D. Spreckels. Its star attraction was the Giant Dipper - a 2,600 foot long coaster. Upon his death, a year after completion, the park was granted to the City of San Diego. It was quite popular through the 30s and 40s, however by the late 60s and 70s it began to fall in disrepair and eventually closed in 1976. It came close to being demolished, but a committee was formed to get it designated as a National Landmark. Eventually, in 1987, even The Plunge (a 60 x 175 pool) closed as well. The committee was not able to raise enough funds to restore the coaster to working order. In 1988, the City Council allowed developers to turn the park into a shopping center, and the park reopened. In 1988, the Santa Cruz Seaside Company was contacted for help in getting the coaster restored, and operational. In 1990, after new coaster cars were completed, the restored coaster opened. The opening year proved to be quite successful and a second car was built, with ticket sales 3 times what they had expected.
I love driving by the coaster as it brings back wonderful memories of Savin Rock, the amusement park that I grew up next to. I loved the memory of the many times I fell asleep to the sounds of the coaster and the screams of the riders. I am saddened that Savin Rock was not deemed valuable to the history of the city and to its people as it was in San Diego, and it was demolished. Most of the people of town loved the park, and still yearn for it today.

My Process: I began with the KardStock from AP Love story, modifying its color to gray with a slight tint of lavender. I added the photo, and masked out portions of it using a watercolor brush. I duplicated the photo 4 times. The bottom layer was placed on blend mode Linear Light, and brought down to about 50% opacity. The next layer was placed on Blend mode Normal, but outer strips were masked out, leaving a hard edge. The opacity of this 2nd photo layer was about 45%. I did the same for the next two photo layers, bringing up the opacity of each with the center strip being at 100%. I added the title, choosing a color from the sky, and then added the journaling, this time choosing a darker sky color. I added the heart, recoloring it slightly, a fotoglow, and finished up by adding an edge overlay, again mimicking the sky coloring, and the Story overlay, placing it on blend mode divide.
