Old Point Loma Lighthouse

I completed a page for the New Lighthouse. Here is a page for the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. Due to the gold rush in 1848, ship traffic to the west coast increased. Eight lighthouses were scheduled to be constructed along the west coast of California, one of which was on the southern tip of Point Loma, which protect San Diego Bay. A road was constructed to the desolate point, and limestone for the project was quarried onsite. Tiles from the ruins of the old Spanish Fort Guijarros from the 1700s were used for the basement floor, and water for construction had to be hauled 7 miles to the site. In late 1855, the lamps were lit for the first time, and it became the lighthouse of the highest elevation in the nation at a height of 462 feet, making it visible about 30 miles out at sea on clear. The height unfortunately also meant that the lighthouse was often shrouded in fog, rendering it useless. For this reason, the New Point Loma Lighthouse was constructed just 36 years later. Falling into disrepair, it was almost demolished in 1913, but eventually ended up in the hands of the National Parks service in 1933, and restored. During wartime, gun batteries and submarine spotters used the sight, and the building was painted camouflage green. In order for ships to be allowed into San Diego Bay, the ships flashed a code, and the nets protecting the harbor were lowered. Being at the tip of the peninsula, allows for great views of San Diego as well as grey whales during their migration from Baja California. It is now used as a museum. I am so glad it was not demolished!

The Process: I began with an ArtsyPaper from AP Beach. I placed the photo, masked it out, and then began painting back in the portions I wanted. This photo was placed on blend mode Hard Light. I duplicated this photo, and placed it on blend mode Overlay, bringing it down to about 30% opacity. I copied the photo again, and for this layer, masked out all but the lighthouse, and placed it on blend mode Multiply, with a 30% opacity as well. I added the sky transfer from AP Viaggio, and added the glow from AP Beach, to bring in a bit of yellow sunshine. I added the elements in the lower right, along with the WordMix brushes, placing them on blend mode Divide. I added various other brushes and texture transfers to fill in portions of the earth, added the BigWord, Edge Overlays, and SkinnyLined Overlay. I finished up by adding the pelicans which were extracted from another photo. They were placed on blend mode HardLight.
