Journaling:
My mother and stepfather met at Rollerland in the late 1940s (Renton, Washington). She was a widow with 3-year-old me, and since she couldnt afford both a baby-sitter and skating, she took me with her. By the time I was in my teens, I was a pretty good dance skater, and went to at least two sessions a week. When Rollerland burned down, I was devastated. For years I didnt skate, simply because there was no rink nearby that had a good hardwood floor, and certainly no good music. Skate King, with rock music and a rubber floor was the best there was. Dave took our kids because I couldnt bear that kind of skating. As a grandmother (!) I discovered a Geezer Session on Thursday mornings in Federal Way. So for several years I drove there each week. It wasnt live music, but it was the kind of dance music I loved. It didnt take long for me to dance again...certainly not with the agility of my youth, but well enough to make it a joy. After taking a nasty spill, however, I realized there were things I wanted to do with all my limbs in tact more than I wanted to continue skating. Falls are inevitable, so I weighed the cost, and retired my skates. Now all I have are the memories...and not a single photo of me roller skating. :'(
What a fascinating memory you've recorded - I enjoyed reading your "dancing" history - I remember the roller skating rage - and think the kids nowadays are missing out on a wonderful sport.

Loved your memory and journaling! It also brought back personal memories of skating at Rollerland in Renton as a child, and being devastated when it burned down. Thanks for sharing the story.
