Old Woman

This photo was in with a bunch of family photos I received from my mom. When I found it, I asked my mom about it, and she said no one knew who this woman was, but someone had written on the back.

Journaling reads: An old woman, sitting in her yard in an old wooden chair. No one in my family know who this woman in. That is really not the story. I agree that the photo is intriquing, however, I love the story that this photograph tell about the woman who took the photograph. From doing research on my ancestors, I have learned that part of my moms side of the family came to America, from Effingham, Surrey, England in the 1700s, and settled in Darlington, South Carolina, fought in the American Revolutionary War and generations later, fought in the Civil War. Times were so different then, the children worked hard on the family farms, and although a one room school house was started by one of the family members, I believe they were taught just what was needed to get by. The Civil War changed the south, and they struggled for generations to begin their lives again, my great-grand mother moving to North Carolina. I am guessing this photograph was probably taken in North Carolina. On the back of the photograph was written: Dartha there are an old picture see if you no that old woman she was digging fish bate whe that was took but I dont no who she is. This reinforces in my mind the level of education they probably had. They spent their lives having and raising children, and working their farm. I think too, that it is so comical that someone back then thought to take a photography of someone they didnt know, but thought was interesting.
