Mad Men is set in the 1960s at an advertising agency in New York City. It is the era of pencil skirts, pointy
breasts, stockings with garter belts, secretarial pools and typewriters. It was generally accepted a woman
would not have career .. she should be married and having babies by age 23 or 24.
As the story line progresses civil rights, feminism, rock 'n roll and antiwar protests force many social and cultural changes. Mad Men makes my stomach churn ... I came of age during the 1960s. I remember how suffocating it was then. I also remember many brave and committed people, with much suffering, helped make this country radically different by the end of the decade."
**P.S.: a special two hour show premiers tonight (3/25) on AMC, probably to be repeated sometime this week. Check your local carrier if you want to catch it/DVR it. I'm hooked on the show even though it is sometimes uncomfortable to watch ... it is compelling, has excellent acting, accurately portrays that era, Highly recommend!
