Risk in Marriage

Journaling reads:
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope”. Jeremiah 29:11

I’ve always heard it said, “You don’t really know a person until you have lived with them.” When I Googled who said it this is what came up.
“The saying, "You don't really know a person until you live with him, travel with him, or do business with him," is attributed to Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), a historical figure in Islam and the second caliph. This quote emphasizes that true understanding of someone comes from experiencing various aspects of their life, not just superficial interactions.”

When I decided to marry Mark a year after Tim died from melanoma, this quote came to mind. However, the one thing that superseded most of the risk involved in marrying Mark after only 6 weeks of dating was our common bond in Christ. And even though I had “known” Mark for 10 years in church interactions, I didn’t really know him the way you do when you date someone for more than 6 weeks! But, I was encouraged by the comments made by those who had know him much longer before Tim and I even came to NC and became a part of the Hillcrest church family as pastor and pastor’s wife. Besides their comments of him being a great guy who would give you the shirt off his back, I knew he was that and more because of his faithful commitment to the Lord even in the tough times he had gone through during the years Tim served at the church. Mark continued to attend and be involved in the ministries of the church and attend extracurricular church events like revivals and preachers’ meetings, etc.

Both he and I had determined that we really were not looking to be married again after the deaths of our spouses. But our “plans” are not God’s plans. And when you realize that God orchestrated the events surrounding our getting together…….well, you might as well go with His plan! And, if He is behind it, what RISK could there be?
