At this time of year, the urge to collect "stuff" really increases. The whole Black Friday thing (which until recently was limited to the US) has seemingly spread everywhere. And the Christmas decorations are already hanging out almost everywhere.
Black Friday, the infamous day after Thanksgiving when stores stunt discounts and consumers engage in a bargain hunt. The run-up to the holidays begins with a bargain-fest, but for me - and hopefully for many of us - it comes with mixed feelings. Amid the advertising explosion for cheap plastic stuff we "can't live without," the question arises: is there a more meaningful and sustainable way to celebrate this time of year?
In a world already weighed down by the burden of overconsumption and environmental challenges, it is increasingly important to think about the impact of our buying habits. Black Friday sometimes seems to revolve around greedy purchases and quick deals, without thinking about the impact on our planet. It is high time to become aware and think about more sustainable alternatives.
One of my biggest concerns around Black Friday is the production of cheap, often unsustainable goods. Plastic items offered at impossibly low prices end up in landfills, contributing to the growing amount of waste plaguing our planet. Resources are depleted and the environment suffers from the production and transportation of these mass-produced goods.
Instead of being seduced by the seemingly irresistible Black Friday deals, we would do better this year - and every year - to make conscious choices.We should strive for a holiday season filled with love, caring and respect for our planet. It is time to shift the focus from material wealth to a wealth of experiences and positive impact. In this way, we make Black Friday not only a day of bargains, but also of conscious choices and sustainability.
