Several times a month, Jim would escort the bus and truck caravan from Kabul through the Khyber Pass into either India or Pakistan - about 300 miles.
He carried water and food plus repair supplies in the jeep.
The road from Kabul to the Pakistan border was a rough path with rocks outlining where the road was. Many vehicles slid off the edge or were buried in landslides. There was traffic going both ways in addition to camel caravans and other livestock along with Afghan tribesmen - a very dangerous road to travel.
The pass was even more dangerous in the winter with heavy snow storms in the mountains.
Jim’s trips through the pass were cut back during the winter.
The Pakistan - India side of the pass was a paved road and was safer to travel.
End of the trip.
Jim would rest 1 or 2 nights before heading back to Kabul - leading the bus and truck caravan.
