Kabul, Afghanistan

Photos of Aunt Mary and Uncle Jim Lamb taken in Afghanistan

Journaling:
Jim Lamb’s lengthy background in the trucking and bus industry in the states brought the offer of working with the Afghanistan government and the trucking industry there.

They moved to Kabul, Afghanistan in January 1960.

Their house was surrounded by a high wall with guards at the entrance. They had many servants who did their jobs in their primitive manner.
Jim used a Jeep for work so Mary used a rickshaw to attend functions at the US embassy or visit many sights in and near Kabul with other ex-pat wives.
A common sight on the road outside their compound was camel and donkey caravans.

This is SO fascinating and interesting, Kay. When a story! We almost got sent to Korea once and we would have lived the same way. What an experience that must have been and you have documented this perfectly. Thanks for sharing this fascinating story with us.

Those are such interesting pictures. I love that you documented this significant part of their lives. Wonderfully done.

This two-page spread brings to mind the books The Far Pavilions. What an incredible journey this must have been. You really have to have gypsy in your soul to live these kinds of adventures! Thanks for sharing their story!

@Susan - s3js - I was fortunate to have talked to my aunt and uncle about what it was like to have lived there. Yes, I did have a gypsy in my soul from them taking me on trips from the time I was just over a year old. Mary's tales of what it was like to live in a primitive culture helped me adapt to living in Cairo, Egypt.
