Stripes are one of the most ancient patterns imagined by humans. During the Middle Ages, it is used to distinguish individuals excluded from society from whom it is better to stay away. During the Renaissance, stripes kept the function of distinction, but momentarily lost their pejorative value to integrate pleasure and freedom. The pattern is adopted by several royal families.
The negativity associated with stripes caught up with them when they were worn by convicts. No doubt the easily noticeable pattern makes any escape attempt difficult.
Horizontal stripes were a sign of inferiority; as in a striped jersey worn by sailors being a symbol of their subordination to the captain. Vertical stripes, on the other hand, associate to upper class' prestige and success. In the 1920's, financiers differentiate themselves by their striped suits.

Wow, a great AnnaLift! Plus your layout has true meaning. Your explanation of stripes should be on the journaling for the layout. I always disliked women's horizontal striped shirts, now I know why.
I wanted to put the journaling on the page but could not figure out how to include the long explanation.

What an incredible page, with the amazing history about stripes. My uncle lived in Miami and delivered groceries from the store where he worked to Al Capone's mansion there in the 1940's.

Oh, Helene, this is magnificent. I love how the stripes adds so much depth and dimension. Great info on the stripes too. Thanks for playing along.

I also never knew the history of stripes and their significance. I just knew to wear vertical vs. horizontal as the latter made you look larger...lol. Love your layout!
