The Colosseum represents Rome at its grandest. The arena hosted spectacular public entertainments, such as gladiator fights, wild animal hunts and public executions from AD 80 to AD 404. The Colosseum is four stories, 160 feet high and covers six acres. The stadium could accommodate 50,000 people. The roof sported a retractable canvas to protect spectators from the sun.
