Dear Betty, Bruno & family,
Got to get some practice in typing as I’m going to need it next week when I start working. How about that!
Yes, I got a job at Fairfax Hopsital [sic] working at the desk in the Emergency Room parttime on Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 to 4:30. Have to go in several evening for training but after that it’ll just be on the weekends. I’m so excited and the pay is extremely good for parttime help. $1.65 an hour. Most places pay about $1.00. Went out for a physical today and start next Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm. Jack thinks it’ll do me good to get away from the kids for awhile [sic] and we can sure use the extra money. We have about six months of it spent already. Isn’t that terrible. I know what you mean about a rat race. Jack laughed when you wrote that and said that sounded exactly like me. Anyway the hospital is only a 5 minute drive from here and wont have to fight any traffic. Now don’t get me wrong. I do have plenty to do around here but I sure like the idea of getting all dressed up and getting out.

Mom wrote too and told us about the nice weekend she had with you when Judy and Herb came over. Boy, those steaks sure sounded good. Judy had told us about their cow. That’s what we need around here. Seems like we are always out of milk.
I sure know what you mean about ironing and mending. If I don’t iron twice a week and sometime more I get behind too. I just can’t stay with it verylong [sic] at a time. It’s always time to do something else like fix lunch or something. Now I must say I do keep up on my mending too. If [sic] fact I’ve done quite a bit of sewing this summer. I’ve made at least five outfits for Ann for play and have material for several more. Yesterday I made myself a black cotton straight skirt. Will need something basic for work. Have lots of b[l]ouses to wear but no skirts that fit me. Also am trying to get a little house cleaning done before I go to work. Did get some walls washed and the curtins [sic] and bedspreads in the kids rooms washed. Did the windows once but they need it again already. Joan sits all day on the heaters under the diningroom [sic] or livingroom [sic] window and you know what happens to the windows. We even had snow today. One day it’s summer clothes and the next it’s winter. [continued]

Journaling:

My memory of Mom working at the hospital revolves around getting two teeth pulled, number 22 and 27. The teeth were not pulled at the hospital but after they were pulled I got to go to the hospital to visit Mom. The dentist had pulled my teeth because they were crowding the four teeth between them.

The typewriter and keys are a great touch to these pages. Fascinating letter! It's so funny how your pages are reminding me of things in my childhood. In our neighborhood in Newark there was a Clara Maass Hospital that looked so similar, I wonder if many hospitals were similarly architected in that era.

It would not surprise me if they were constructed at the same time. The image of the hospital is an old postcard from the time period I think I purchased this one from eBay.
