Journaling
The Imperil Hotel has had three different looks over the years. The first was built in the late 1880s at the request of the Japanese aristocracy. They wanted a hotel that catered to Western visitors. The second hotel was designed and built by Frank Lloyd Write between 1919 and 1923. It opened in 1923 and remained open until 1967 when it was demolished due to damage suffered during WWII. However, the central lobby and the reflecting pool was dissembled and rebuilt at The Museum Meiji-mura.
On the 7th of March 1955 Dad went to the Imperial Hotel Arcade and purchased an engagement ring. It was .56 carats. The cost was 100,000.00 yen, about $278.00 at the time.
It is unknown when Dad proposed to Mom. She does not remember if it was before he went TDY to Japan or sometime after. Nor does she remember the proposal. What we do know is that Moms sister, Virginia was married 19 February 1955. The wedding dress was made by a friend of Grandmas who lived a few blocks over from the family in Santa Rosa. Extra fabric was purchased. Whether the extra fabric was purchased with the intent to remake the bodice of the dress for Mom is not clear. Either way Moms sister Betty remade the bodice of Virginias wedding dress to fit Mom.
