I used a reverse mask to brush the jay overtop of the paper, then duplicated the layer and with an inverted mask brush overtop the wings and eyes a bit with the blend mode changed to overlay. I used a gradient map to erase some of the darker paper to reveal the lighter tones of the underlying paper.
